Opprettet 01.07.1955 ved kongelig resolusjon i henhold til Lov om naturvern av 1. desember 1954, paragraf 6. Ny lov om naturvern av 19. juni 1970, og oppnevnelsen har skjedd i henhold til lovens paragraf 17.
Mandate:
Rådets oppgave er å arbeide for naturvernets fremme. Det skal tjene som rådgivende organ for Miljøverndepartementet i saker etter naturvernloven og andre saker hvor natur- eller miljøverninteresser blir berørt.
