About The State Administration Database

An introduction to the purpose, structure, and content of the State Administration Database.

The Norwegian State Administration Database offers a comprehensive overview of how Norway’s public administration has been structured and evolved from 1947 to the present day. It was first established at the LOS Center in 1992-93, moved to the Rokkan Center in 2002, and was overseen by NSD from 2006 until 2022. Since the merger in 2022, the database has been managed by Sikt.

With approximately 5200 registered units and over 15600 recorded organisational changes (figures that are continuously updated), the database meticulously tracks the evolution of ministries and state agencies. It serves as a vital resource for researchers and public administrators, providing insights into the establishment, restructuring, and dissolution of government entities over time.

Covering a board range of public entities-including internal ministry units, administrative bodies, public enterprises, state-owned companies, and state foundations-the database goes beyond basic structural details. It also includes data on employees, legal frameworks, annual reports, and relevant research publications. Organisational numbers from the Brønnøysund Register Centre are integrated to enhance traceability.

Data is collected from various official records, including the Norwegian Government Yearbook, national budgets, government websites, and institutional archives.

By consolidating data from multiple projects, the database serves as a growing knowledge hub, ensuring access to both historical and new datasets.
