Opprettet 07.09.1945 ved kongelig resolusjon i henhold til provisoriskanordning av 4. mai 1945 om opprettelse av et midlertidigarbeidsdirektorat. Nåværende styre med hjemmel i lov om tiltak til åfremme sysselsetting av 27. juni 1947, paragraf 2, jfr. kgl.

Styret skal nøye følge utviklingen av sysselsettingssituasjonen ilandet, virke for jevn og tilstrekkelig sysselsetting og væredepartementets rådgiver i saker om sysselsetting og arbeidsledighet.
