Antall distriktskontor tar frem til år 2002 utgangspunkt i antallet kommuner som eksisterte det gitte året (jf. NSDs kommunedatabase). I enkelte tilfeller kan imidlertid noen - om enn få - kommuner ha hatt felles ligningskontor/folkeregister, hvilket dermed ikke fanges opp her. Se årene 1965, 1970, 1980, 1988 og 1997 for konkret endringshistorie for disse årene.
