The department develops strategies and policies and has administrative duties within the areas of nature conservation, recreation and sustainable use of biodiversity: It is also responsible for the majority of the Ministry’s work with energy-related issues.
The department coordinates the Ministry’s work relating to County Governors, environmental economics, research and monitoring/environmental data and the OECD.
Central areas within nature management include the implementation of protected areas (including forest protection, the national park plan and county protection plans), the protection of large carnivores and other wild animals, combating and controlling alieninvasive species, water management, the management of wild salmon and freshwater fish, evaluating environmental issues relating to the agricultural, energy and aquaculture industries, environmental risk assessments relating to the use of genetically modified organisms (GMO), use of motorised vehicles in nature and monitoring and mapping the environment
In addition, the department is responsible for ensuring that Norway complies with the UN’s Convention on Biodiversity, the Cartagena Protocol on GMOs and the Nagoya Protocol on genetic resources, that it participates in international initiatives on forests, as well as for coordinating work relating to the United Nations Environment Programme, the Intergovernmental Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services, NASCO and other international conventions that deal with nature diversity.
