Oppgaver og ansvarsfelt:
Avdelingen koordinerer og kvalitetssikrer departementets arbeid med budsjett, økonomiforvaltning, jus og styring for å sikre en samlet og strategisk styring av institusjoner og sektorer.

Avdelingens ansvarsområde omfatter departementets personalpolitikk, organisasjonsutvikling, økonomi, drift, arkiv, IKT, sikkerhet og beredskap.

Avdelingen har også ansvar for utdanningsstøtte som politikkområde, og etatsstyringsansvar for Statens lånekasse for utdanning, Norsk utenrikspolitisk institutt (NUPI), Norsk institutt for forskning om oppvekst, velferd og aldring (NOVA) og Meteorologisk institutt (Met.no).
