- Measures to safeguard natural diversity in freshwater and onshore areas along the coastline (i.e. prioritised species, selected types of nature, protected areas, controlling foreign organisms in water and onshore areas along the coastline).
- Work with the knowledge platform for fresh water.
- Complying with the EU Water Framework Directive and the Norwegian Regulation on a Framework for Water Management, in freshwater, on the coastline and in ground water.
- Management of wild salmon, management of freshwater fish, the Norwegian Salmon and Freshwater Fisheries Act, the Norwegian Tana Act, and of issues concerning the establishment of salmon information centres.
- Environmental impact of aquaculture activities, with the exception of pollution which is dealt with by the Department for Sea and Pollution Control.
- Coordinating work dealing with foreign organisms.

Tasks, 2025:
Section for Water Management
The section works to safeguard the biodiversity of freshwater and is responsible for water management, wild salmon and invasive species. The section also works with wetlands and energy issues in water, and a comprehensive plan for the Oslofjord. The section is also responsible for the department's work with environmental crime, natural risks, and nature restoration.
