The Section is responsible for Norway’s efforts to strengthen and reform the UN, follow up the UN regular budget and administrative activities, and coordinate election issues and Norwegian candidacies to international organisations.

The Section is responsible for the UN’s main bodies: the General Assembly, the Security Council, the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), and the UN Secretary-General’s Office and Secretariat. It has coordinating responsibility for Norway’s efforts under the UN development system, including the UN resident coordinators. The Section follows up UN preventive diplomacy and peacebuilding efforts, including the UN's special political missions and special envoys.

The Section leads Norway’s work on the UN Convention against Corruption and the development of a UN Framework Convention on international tax cooperation, anti-corruption, combating transnational organised crime and money laundering. The Section coordinates Norway’s participation in the annual General Assembly high-level week. It also provides support to Norwegian consular and diplomatic missions in connection with their cooperation with the UN at country level.

The Section is responsible for cooperation with the following international organisations: the UN Secretary-General’s Office; the UN Department of Political and Peacebuilding Affairs (DPPA); the UN Development Programme (UNDP); the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and the UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC).
