The company is fully owned by the Norwegian Ministry of Trade and Industry. It was established on 25 June 2012, operational from 2 July . The management of officially supported export credits was previously done by Eksportfinans ASA.
The system of officially supported export credits was established in 1978. The purpose then and now is to regulate competition among OECD countries, including interest rates and repayment terms for officially supported loans related to exports of goods and services.
The scheme enables Norwegian exporters to compete on terms and conditions according to the “OECD Arrangement on Government Supported Export Credits”. Long-term and stable funding may sometimes be a scarce resource. Export Credit Norway plays an important role in such situations.
