The Seafood Department is responsible for the seafood industry and promotion of seafood, as well as consumer interests and market access. The Department also deals with industrial economics as well as quality control of seafood and seafood products through the entire production chain, and also introduces initiatives to increase seafood consumption in Norway. Trade policy and market access, including veterinary legislation and technical trade barriers, are other important areas of responsibility; at global level (WTO), European level (EU-EEA) and regional/ bilateral level (EFTA).

The Department bases its work on the value chain ”from fjord to table” and contributes to enhance value creation, among other things, through the Marine Valuation Creation programme and generic marketing funded by the industry and administered by the Norwegian Seafood Council. The Department also deals with international trade law and implementation and monitoring of Norwegian legislation; the First-hand Sales Act and purchaser registration, the Fish Export Act and also the Food Act, where it applies to seafood.
