The Department for Coastal Management and Marine Environment is responsible for matters related to coastal management, the marine environment and port and sea transport policy. The Department follows-up decisions regarding sea transport laid down in the National Transport Plan, including port policy, development of fishing harbours and sea lanes, operation and maintenance of maritime infrastructure and the pilot service. The Department is also responsible for coordination of environmental policy and spatial planning, maritime safety and the governmental preparedness against acute pollution.
The Department’s area of responsibility also includes coordinating the Ministry’s policy towards the High North, coastal culture, and the infrastructure on Jan Mayen. The Department is responsible for the Port and Fairway Act, the Pilotage Act and sections of the Pollution Control Act regulating preparedness and response measures against acute pollution.
